Wellington is, was and for the foreseeable future will be a very...interesting city.
Did I love it?! Sure! Would I go again?! Probably! Would I live there? Not a chance!
Now I don't want this post to be a total rant (well no more than usual anyway), I did enjoy our time there but then again I didn't enjoy our time there.
Confused? Yeah me too. We've been back a week now, from what was a 4 day 3 night trip. Before I get in to the inner workings of Wellington the highs, lows, thrills and spills. Let me first start out at one of my favourite places in the entire world...'ANY AIRPORT BAR IN THE WORLD.'
It's no secret I bloody love an airport bar, for a plethora of reasons and don't worry I will cover this in a later article but for now all you need to know is on Thursday morning at 9:00am we were sharing a bucket of beers and playing cards waiting for our flight.
From Queenstown to Wellington is a little over an hour by air so a short time later we were touched down on the North Island for the first time and as we were warned the weather in Wellington was...rubbish. Windy, cloudy and cold. Set against the cities backdrop this made for a pretty bleak scene.
That however would be totally outdone in under an hour as we hopped off the bus and walked the 15 or so minute walk to our "accomodation." I placed the word in parenthesis because to call it 'accomodation' would be an insult to anything above a tent and not even a good tent.
The property was listed on a well known app perfect for renting out space in a city for a short period of time. Having entered the room I felt instantly outraged at said app, that this place was allowed to exist. It stank it was dirty, it was uncomfortable and it stank.
Having decided we didn't want to spend a minute more than necessary in this H**L Hole than we needed to, we headed in to the city for lunch.
After a delicious pizza and a questionable local beer, some light investigative work on a smart phone we were booked in to a hotel in the city centre for 2 of the 3 nights...and a nice one at that.
It was around this time I actually opened my eyes a little and started to see Wellington in a different light. There was art everywhere: street art, hand crafted art, unique art and art art. I don't normally care for that stuff but it was alright to look at and I didn't hate it.
One thing I did like was the overwhelming amount of breweries and local brews to try and try we did.
By now my relationship with Wellington seemed to go something along the lines of: "Hey we have something really cool that you'll like." swiftly follow by "but we have loads of vegan cafes and enough chai latte to sink a hemp ship."
Make no mistake Wellington is a hipsters paradise, its expensive and it has an uncomfortable non-local feel to it but it's also interesting, exciting and has plenty for everyone to do.
The museum itself is worth the visit, there are hikes, photo opportunities galore great food (non-vegan food) and even better breweries.
The rest of the trip went off without a hitch and we had a lot fun.
Having somewhat being turned around on Wellington by then the end of our time there, I can genuinely say that I would almost, probably, certainly definitely maybe say go to Wellington...in summer and for no more than 4 days.
